• A 15-member delegation from Anhui Province, led by Mr.
Zhang Rongguo, First Deputy Director General of Anhui Provincial Education
Department, visited Maryland from June 25 through June 28, 2008. Delegates
toured campuses of local community colleges, colleges and universities the
first day. In the evening, the Chinese delegates and Maryland education
leaders enjoyed a relaxing evening together. |

• On the second day, the delegation convened with Maryland higher education
leaders to learn about the similarities and differences in their respective
systems. Dean Esslinger, chair of the Anhui Education SubCommittee, started
off the conference by introducing the official leaders of the Symposium, Dr
James Lyon, Secretary of Higher Education; Mr. Zhang, First Deputy Director,
Anhui Provincial Education Department; Dr. William Kirwan, Chancellor of
University System of Maryland, and Dennis Schnepfe, Interim Secretary of
State. |

• Symposium participants and guests listened to other
presentations on “Universities and Technology Transfer” and “Meeting the
Needs of the Community." |
