This Civil War
monument stands in Rose Hill Cemetery in Cumberland. Sponsored by citizens of Allegany County and
the Cumberland Women's Relief Corps, it honors the men of the county who fought for the Union. The
bronze statue of a Union soldier was cast by the American Bronze Company of Chicago and was
dedicated on Memorial Day, 1895. The common soldier monument form was popularized after the Civil
War in recognition of the 600,000 men lost during the war, most of whom were privates and
non-commissioned officers. The soldier statue symbolized the democratic ideal of the individual. The
Monuments Commission had the bronze statue cleaned and waxed in 1997, and provides routine
maintenance.
